Book Choice: Sacrifice (by SJ Bolton)

Posted on Apr 27, 2008
Synopsis
Moving to remote Shetland has been unsettling enough for consultant surgeon Tora Hamilton; even before the gruesome discovery she makes one rain-drenched Sunday afternoon . . . Deep in the peat soil of her field she is shocked to find the perfectly preserved body of a young woman, a gaping hole in her chest where her heart has been brutally removed.

Three rune marks etched into the woman’s skin bear an eerie resemblance to carvings Tora has seen all over the islands: in homes she has visited, even around a fireplace in her own cellar. As she uncovers disturbing links to an ancient Shetland legend, the unfriendly detective, her smooth-talking boss and even her own husband are at pains to persuade her to leave well alone.

Is their concern genuine? Perhaps, for when terrifying threats start rolling in like the cold island mists it seems someone wants Tora out of the picture, once and for all. Sacrifice will grip readers from start to finish. It is a bone chilling, spellbinding debut set on a deceptively beautiful island.

Buy Sacrifice from Amazon

Quick Reviews
'Inspired by an eerie ancient legend, Sacrifice is a chilling, mesmerising debut thriller. S. J. Bolton is one to watch' TESS GERRITSEN, bestselling author of Vanish and The Mephisto Club

'Part forensic-thriller, part medical-thriller, Sacrifice combines both elements to great effect inthis atmospheric and original debut' SIMON BECKETT, author of The Chemistry of Death

About the Author
Born in Lancashire, Sharon Bolton trained as an actress and a dancer, has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has a degree in drama and an MBA. She pursued a successful career in PR and marketing, but her career break to start a family enabled her to write her first novel, Sacrifice, which has been inspired by her fascination with British traditional folklore.

How To Make Quick And Easy Doughnuts

Posted on Apr 27, 2008

This Quick and Easy Doughnuts Recipe does not need much of the physical work associated with traditional doughnuts. However, they still taste great and maintain that quality fresh doughnut experience! Watch the step by step video guide.

Recipe serves 8.

Ingredients needed:
250ml yoghurt, 170g sugar, 2 eggs, 1Tbsp vanilla, 45g butter (melted), 500g flour, 2Tbsp baking powder, 1Tbsp baking soda, 50g flour for dusting, ¼tsp salt, 1ltr vegetable oil, powdered sugar for presentation

Utensils needed:
2 bowls, 1 whisk, 1 wooden spoon, 1 saucepan, 1 slotted spoon, 1 large cutter, 1 small cutter, 1 rolling pin, 1 tray, paper towel

1. Whisk the eggs and the sugar
Start your doughnuts by putting the 2 eggs and the sugar into a mixing bowl. Whisk them briskly until their appearance becomes very pale and fluffy.

2. Add the yoghurt, vanilla, salt and butter
Next, you will need to introduce the yoghurt, the vanilla, the salt and the melted butter to the dough and mix it all together briefly.

3. Mix dry ingredients
You can now add the baking soda and the baking powder to the bowl of flour and mix them together a little bit. Next, add this dry mix to the egg mixture and combine them thoroughly. Be careful not to over-mix the dough or the resulting doughnuts will turn out tough.

4. Roll the dough out and cut it
Begin forming the doughnuts by sprinkling some flour upon the work surface and then dusting your hands with a little more flour. Now roll the dough out to a thickness of about half of a centimetre. Next, use the large cutter to cut out the doughnuts. You can then use the small cutter to cut out their centres. Set the doughnuts aside and combine the leftover dough with some new dough. Roll it out again and repeat the process until all the dough is used.

5. Fry
It is now time to fry your doughnuts. Place a saucepan with the oil over a medium heat. While waiting for the oil to heat up, you can prepare a tray by lining it with some paper towel. Now place the doughnuts into the hot oil a few at a time. Let them cook for about one minute until golden brown and turn them over. Cook the other side and place them on the tray. Repeat until all the dough is used.

6. Dust and serve
Place your doughnuts on a plate and liberally dust them with powdered sugar.
Your doughnuts are now ready to serve! As a serving suggestion they can be glazed with strawberry, chocolate, or raspberry sauces.

How To Complain In A Restaurant

Posted on Apr 27, 2008

How to complain in a restaurant: VideoJug presents an easy to follow guide to complaining in a restaurant that won't leave you blushing.

You will need
A sub-standard restaurant
A slow or rude waiter
A sprinkling of righteous indignation
A little tact and grace
Act immediately
The key to successful complaining is to highlight the problem immediately thereby giving the restaurant the opportunity to resolve the problem with minimum fuss- don't wait until you've eaten half of an inedible meal or for the bill to arrive to voice an objection.

Identify your aims
Think about what you hope to achieve by complaining. Would an apology be enough? Would you like your food replaced? Or do you expect money off the bill? If there is a hygiene issue you are unlikely to want a replacement meal and would probably just like to leave without being charged.

What can you expect?
Make sure your suggested resolution matches your complaint. If a meal you have ordered is well cooked and served as described on the menu but you just don't like it, it's unreasonable to demand compensation. However if you ask politely, many restaurants will be happy to offer you an alternative.

Allergies and dislikes
There are often ingredients guides on menus but to avoid problems it is worth telling the waiter of any allergies or aversions to particular ingredients while you're ordering. If any of the stated ingredients are then present in your meal you should complain and send it back immediately.

Contain your rage
You are less likely to get what you want by being rude or aggressive with a waiter. Discretely call them over, explain the problem, express your disappointment and ask them to resolve the situation.

Be assertive
Don't be shy - you're paying for a meal to be cooked properly and to be waited on efficiently and politely. If this isn't your experience then you are well within your rights to complain.

The next level
If your concerns are not met with an acceptable resolution ask, politely, to speak to the manager. Explain the problem and state that you are not satisfied with how it has been resolved.

Tipping
If service has been poor, reducing the tip or not leaving one at all is a powerful way of expressing your displeasure. However, if the food was of a low standard but the waiter did a good job of addressing your complaint by giving you a discount or complimentary dish then a tip is still appropriate.

Outside help
If after complaining to the waiter and the manager you still feel like you have been fobbed off it's time to take your complaints to a higher authority. Contact your local consumer standards body for advice. In the UK you can try the Citizens Advice Bureau or the Office of Fair Trading.

Illness
If once you've left a restaurant you become ill from food poisoning that you believe can be traced back to the restaurant you should immediately report it to the food standards agency or department of health for everyone else's benefit as well as your own.

Compliment
As important as it is to complain if something has gone wrong during a meal, it's equally important to compliment and reward good or exceptional service. Whether it's good or bad, feedback is often appreciated by managers as it offers them a real insight to the service they are providing, so speak up and enjoy your meal.

How To Deal With Man Flu

Posted on Apr 25, 2008

If your other half has got 'man flu', try and be patient. Be a great nursemaid with the video guide to dealing with man flu.

Check it's not real
Doctors used to leave a £10 note at the foot of the bed, telling patients they could keep the money if they could sit up and grab it. If you even made an attempt, you didn't have real flu. So adapt this tried and tested strategy.....and there! Right! This man does not have real flu. He is a lazy, whinging malingerer with the sniffles.

What you should do
Remember, in his mind he's about to drop dead- because he is a man. Women are nails. They are genetically primed for pain, hence high heels, waxing, and childbirth. So accept the innate sex differences, accept his failings, and be nice. Do all your tutting and sniggering behind the door. When you enter the sickbay, you should be Florence Nightingale, ready to tend his brow, plump his pillows and mop his spittle.

Regression
He will regress to boyhood. Encourage this. Buy him comics- as real books might strain his eyes. Buy him lollipops to soothe his poor throat. Maybe a cap to keep his head warm. If this does not make him feel better, he will regress further. So clean him up and burp him, it'll be over soon.

Every cloud has a silver lining
You can take advantage of this pale husk of a man. First call in sick, blaming his weakness. Then confine him to your room, and pump him full of the type of medicine that'll make him sleep. Now make the rest of the flat a girlie den. Watch the films you want, eat what you want, and spend hours doing girl stuff. Just remember to come running when the little bell rings.

When he's better
Demand the best present you've ever received- to offset the nurses' bill.

How To Tell Someone You Love Them

Posted on Apr 25, 2008

How to lay your heart on the line and summon up the courage to tell someone you love them the Video Jug way.

Be sure
It's unlikely you'll know immediately after meeting your beloved, if they really are The One. Bide your time, to check you find those quirks of hers charming, and not more and more irritating as time goes on. Only say those three little words if you mean them, and remember once you've said it, you can't take it back.

Be sincere
Whether you decide to let her know the wimps way, or tell her spontaneously, or plan a romantic event around it - you need to be sure she knows you're being serious. So NEVER tell her when you have drunk a little too much, when you've had some fantastic news, or when you've had some terrible news. You may be far too over-emotional, and she may doubt your sincerity.

Advice for wimps
If you a pathetic, lily-livered weed, wait until you know she won't answer her phone in person, and then leave a message that professes your love. This way, she isn't under pressure to respond right then.... but be aware it may give her time to buy a one way ticket to Brazil.

Be spontaneous
Once you know you're in love, an opportunity to express this will probably present itself naturally. You may find yourself overcome by a wave of emotion, and blurting out 'I love you', regardless of how suitable the occasion is for romantic gestures.

Be organised
If you want a more controlled approach, plan a special occasion, in a special place, with some special food, and some special music for that special someone.
But let the specialness end there. When it comes to the Big Moment, keep it simple. So avoid distracting her from the meaning of your words with an over-elaborate delivery. Don't hesitate, procrastinate or cogitate. Always remember that less is more.

Her reaction
Congratulations. You've done it. But hang on, she's not saying anything. And now she's just said 'ahh, thanks'. Don't panic. This is NOT the time to say 'Do you love me too?' Be patient. It may take a while for it to sink in. Just because she doesn't say anything straight away doesn't mean she doesn't love you as well.

Hang on, she's immediately said it back. What do you do now? Don't panic. This is great, remember? This is what you wanted to happen. But it's probably a good idea to have a few follow-up conversation topics at hand to keep things flowing. Samples might include: Shall we tell all our friends- now we're in love? Shall we buy a kitten- now we're in love? Now we're in love, can you dye your hair blonde?

How To Make Greek Salad

Posted on Apr 24, 2008

Typical Greek Salad Recipe with feta cheese and black olives: an appetising lunch! A Greek classic.

This recipe serves 2.

Ingredients needed:
4 ripe tomatoes, 1 red onion, 1 cucumber, 1 green pepper, 1 red pepper, 250g feta cheese, 100g black olives, ½ lemon, 80ml olive oil, 1Tbsp oregano, Salt and pepper

Utensils needed:
Cutting board, knife, bowl, spoon, fork, peeler

Cut the tomatoes
Firstly, cut the top of the tomato and discard. And continue to chop it roughly into rustic chunky slices. Then, discarding the bottom, roughly cube. As Greek salad is a rustic salad everything is cut big and chunky. Take another tomato and repeat until all the tomatoes are cut into chunky cubes. Then place in a large bowl.

Cut the onion
Using your vegetable peeler, peel off the skin from top to the bottom, creating a striped pattern by peeling then missing the next strip. Cut off both ends then slice them in half and cut them across into cubes. And add them to the bowl of tomatoes and onion.

Cut the peppers
Take a red pepper and using your large knife cut into several large slices discarding the centre with the seeds. Cut the slices in half and then into chunky cubes. Take a green pepper and repeat exactly the same process. When they are all cubed transfer them into the bowl with the rest of the ingredients.

Assemble the salad
Add the oregano to the bowl then the black olives and the salt and pepper. Then taking a fork, pierce a lemon and squeeze the juice all over the salad discarding any pips then pour over the olive oil and using your spoon combine it all together.

Serve
Just before serving heap the feta cheese on top of your salad and serve.
